Pfizer and BioNTech reported that hackers have successfully and “unlawfully” accessed the companies’ vaccine data that’s currently under review by the European Medicines Agency.
The EMA confirmed the cyberattack and said that the breach is under investigation by local law officials. As far as the agency knows, no personal data about trial participants was accessed. According to the EMA, the cyberattack will not impact the timeline for the agency’s review of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
Cyberattacks related to COVID-19 vaccines have been on the rise in recent months. According to Reuters, hackers in numerous countries including Iran, Russia, China, Vietnam and North Korea have been linked to potential attempts to steal information about vaccines and therapeutics.
