Workers unions took to the streets this week in France to protest job cuts being proposed by the country’s largest drugmaker.
According to an Associated Press report, around 200 workers held a one-day strike at several Sanofi sites arguing that the job cuts will hamper the country’s ability to fight the coronavirus.
Last year, the company announced its intention to axe about 1,000 jobs over three years as part of a restructuring plan. Sanofi said it plans to rely on voluntary departures to slim down its workforce.
The backlash comes as Sanofi struggles to catch up to rivals making COVID-19 vaccines. Sanofi is currently developing a vaccine candidate with GlaxoSmithKline, but had to delay its timeline for rollout until late 2021 due to efficiency issues in patients over 50.
