At least 10 people have died from smoke inhalation at a manufacturing plant in China owned by a large pharmaceutical company.
On Monday, sparks from a pipe welding project caused a substance to ignite, triggering an explosion and fire. In addition to the 10 people who were killed, about a dozen rescue workers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The plant is owned by Qilu Tianhe Huishi Pharmaceutical Co., which produces medicines to fight cancer, cardiovascular problems and infections. The incident is reportedly under investigation.
Although pharma plant explosions are relatively rare, China continues to struggle with deadly manufacturing incidents. In March, an explosion and massive fire at a chemical plant in China killed over 60 people and injured hundreds.
